Where's There is Smoke, There's Fire!

You are looking at the copier contract your friendly rep in San Jose brought by for you to sign, and there are a lot of details.  A LOT of details!!  Now, of course it is all in 6pt font so that reading the terms is nearly impossible.  Leave it to lawyers to turn a 4 page document and put it onto one page so it doesn’t look too overwhelming to sign.  Before you sign this document, at least do yourself a favor and look for these “getting ripped off” provisions. (I am not saying you won’t sign, just be clear to understand how it works..)

  1. Auto-renewals.  Do you have to give 90 days notice?  Does it have to be written?  Make sure you know the details on this or you will pay for extra months on your copier contract in San Jose.
  2. Auto-increases — Will your price go up 12% per year?  If it says, “we reserve the right to raise your monthly rate by no more than __%…  you can be sure it will increase each year by ___%.
  3. Return of equipment — Who is responsible for returning equipment?
  4. Coverage restrictions — Does it say you can only print 20% average page coverage?

Remember, things are on a contract for a reason.  There is a thought and intent for all of the verbage.  Since it is a contract, you have a right to negotioate the terms of your copier contract in San Jose.
